What is IELTS?
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the world's most recognized English language proficiency tests. For Canada immigration, IELTS results are used to assess your language abilities and assign Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels.
IELTS General Training
Required for Canada immigration (Express Entry, most PR applications). Tests practical, everyday English skills. This is what you need for Express Entry.
IELTS Academic
Required for study permits and university admission. Tests academic English for higher education. Schools may also accept General Training—check requirements.
🔄 IELTS Alternatives for Canada
IRCC accepts other language tests:
- CELPIP General - Canadian English test, computer-based (celpip.ca)
- TEF Canada - French language test
- TCF Canada - French language test
- PTE Core - Recently accepted for some programs
Check current IRCC language requirements for approved tests.
IELTS to CLB Score Conversion
Canada uses Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) to measure language proficiency. Your IELTS scores are converted to CLB levels for immigration purposes. Higher CLB = more Express Entry CRS points.
📊 IELTS General Training to CLB Conversion
Note: Conversion varies slightly by skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). See official IRCC conversion charts.
Why CLB Matters for Express Entry
Language ability is one of the biggest factors in your CRS score:
- CLB 10 in all skills can give you 136 points (single) or 128 points (married)
- Each CLB level increase can add significant CRS points
- CLB 9+ is highly competitive - aim for IELTS 7.0+ in each band
- Second language (French) gives additional bonus points
IELTS Test Structure
IELTS tests four language skills. Total test time is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.
Listening (30 minutes)
